PSU for 9800GT gfx card

Recommended Posts

i'm from India.

I just bought evga 9800GT  & Corsair 2GB (1x2) :alien:

My config.:

Intel dg965wh

C2D e4500

e-VGA 9800gt ,

Corsair 3GB ram @ 800MHz

80GB Hitachi. (adding another 320GB),

400w PSU.

i have zebronics antibiotic cabinet which came with zebronics 400w psu.

[or ]

Now evga states:

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.

(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amp.)

An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector (hard drive power dongle to PCI-E 6 pin adapter included with card).

and from evga FAQ,

Also, make sure that the power supply meets the minimum requirements of the video card. More important than the wattage will be how many Amps are available on the 12v power rail of the power supply. You can check this on the power supply unit itself by removing the side of the case. The label on the power supply will list the 3v, 5v, and 12v power rails. Add up the number of Amps listed next to any 12v rails listed and make sure that the total is greater than or equal to the minimum required listed on the side of your product box.

Zebronics PSU volt/amp details

its clear that this PSU will PHAIL to run 9800GT even for just running Vista, so guys suggest a better PSU under Rs.2800/- INR.

Indian site with brand/model + prices

Can CoolerMaster RS500-PCARA3 Extreme Power +500W (2.8k INR)run my config w/o any problems?

btw, this is my FIRST graphics card :D, before this i lived with Intel GMA900 & then Intel GMA x3000. with later, i could play COD4 :D

three models availabe at that site, which one to go for?

CoolerMaster = RRS390-PMSRA3 = Extreme Power = 390W

CoolerMaster = RS460-PCARA3 = Extreme Power - 460W

CoolerMaster - RS500-PCARA3 - Extreme Power +500W

found some detail on CM500

CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus RS-500-PCAR-A3 - power supply - 500 Watt (CM500W)

Output Current

+3.3V - 22 A

+5V - 25 A

+12V1 - 18 A

+12V2 - 18 A

-12V - 0.5 A

+5VSB - 2.5 A

what does that mean. does it mean that CM500W will suffice, as v1+v2 = 18A+18A = 36Amps.

btw, i dont know much about PSU, can you guys tell me how does this dual 12v rail work or how to connect it to GPU/mobo...?

Help me out guys, gotta make the purchase in 3days.

NOTE: #1: I'm not going to change the m/b in near future, so no way of Overclocking.

#2: i have 2 pen drives (2GB each) plugged in m/b, for Vista ready boost.

#3: Cabinet has three 80mm LED fans.

That Zebronic looks like typical, possibly dangerous for components, ancient weak design, crapola.

But those parts won't ever reach even 200W peak draw (probably 170W at max) so quality 300W PSU would be more than enough and depending on how much it sucks even that Zebronics might work.
