I want to see a serious scientific test before this begins. Before you sand use the heatsink as is and create a control environment, measure the temps so we know is lapping is worth while. I doubt it. I find that water cooling isn't all it's cracked up to be for the venice chip or the 7800GTX and now I'm much more sceptical of extreme cooling methods, lapping might be the same.

i don't really have time to do a test like that... I just want to get it over and done with. I am contemplating just putting it in like that without lapping as i'll be using AS5.

The only reason why i considered lapping was that although the base is quite smooth, you can see that it has been machined in a circular pattern. The fine machine grooves are visible with naked eye.

I'll post up some more pics when i get the heat sink through.

The contact surface on my Hyper48 is perfectly smooth. I'm so glad mine was in such good shape when I got it.

COOLER MASTER...

I want you to sort this out ASAP!!! I'm not going back to NOVATECH for another replacement they'll just send me out another DUD and i don't have time for that.

Why did CM ship these HSF's out in this state in the first place anyway???

email rma@coolermaster.nl , the guy will rpboabbly tell you to go stuff youself in not so many words, failing that i went in the to user feedback section on these boards and posted a big whining thread, suggest you do the same if all else fails, see what i mean dont use novatech, everything you get from there is no good.
