Isn't the 4-pin connector an adapter for 3-pin RGB?

The ML360 comes with a gizmo to attach and power the RGB on the fans. They connect with 3-pins. Now my MB has a 4-pin connector which is different. But the gizmo also has its own 4-pin connector which seems like it wants to connect to the 4-pin connector on the motherboard. In addition, there's a button to switch between "addressable" mode and "standard" mode. So it sounds like the gizmo can serve as an adapter between the two or is this not correct? If it's not correct, what's the 4-pin connector for, and what is meant by "standard" mode?
