As a Half Life 2 fan, i have an obligation to make a case mod around the best fps game that has ever released. I've been thinking about it since my last case mod that participated in an international (2012) event (sadly it was never completed as the website that the competition held got issues as far as i can remember). So, in a few words, i will be fusing a few techniques of mine and some others in order to achieve the best result that i imagined and thinking about. Rusting, crackle paint, scorched looked exterior side panel and color splash or even some paintbrush are the main tools to achieve something great and most of all something that i have always been dreaming of. So, Half Life 2: Gordon Freeman edition is commencing!! I will soon be posting pictures, so be patient and i hope that i fulfill my dream since 2012 and beyond!! The "victim" will be a Cavalier case!!

As for main components, there will be used old ones as i already have them and the only thing i will acquire is a cpu (AMD Phenom 2 1090t and one decent Cooler Master power supply).

Motherboard will be an Asus crosshair IV formula (AM3 platform)

Here i took off the side panel where i'm thinking to cut as the half life 2 symbol and there will be applied acrylic beneath it. Today i will be getting a template and i will measure later on how much panel i will cut in order to achieve what i'm thinking.

Next i quick measured where i imagine the symbol will be cut. Two of my main assistants in this are a ruler and a pen!

I tought for the already existing grills as they are being cut, i thought to make it embossed as the outline is being processed using some some bondo fiberglass putty and make it look like scorched sand or plastic. Same pattern will be applied to the other side panel.

I forgot to mention, that a metal lamda will be made in order to match the rest of the theme or maybe i'll make it out of plastic (3d printed) and bond with the rest acrylic window!

Well, as the time went by, i was talking with a friend of mine who will supply me with some fan grills with the lamda logo PLUS during our conversation he gave me a hint which i liked very much. What is about, is a Half Life 2 logo 3d printed and standing vertically. Then i will make it look like it scorched the case on its way out. I will show you some premature rendered pictures of what i am talking about. The "scorched metal/plastic" effect will be applied next.

What i plan to do, is rip off all the 5.25" covers and bond or just put an action figure of Gordon Freeman inside the bays and make him look like he is trying to brake the glass (which is going to be acrylic) with a slight crack on it. So what i did is buy this particular action figure from NECA. Too bad i have to wait until March....sigh....lets focus on the basics and proceed with getting the template and cut the side panel accordingly. Next update will be in the morning as it's quite late here! More will come shortly!

Today i got the template which i'll be cutting according to the logo's outline and as i measured before i get them, i will use the black one as it is bigger and closer to what i want.

Later on today, the template will be cut and see how it sits on the panel.

Also i got a spray can to blood red because my intention is to make some details of blood splatter or splash.

Time for a slight update! As you will see, i cutted the logo's outline so i can mark the panel later out of it.

Here is my little assistant for the job!

S3810013.thumb.JPG.71df8cdd5d84ac38da18b472e9761d73.JPG

It was quite tricky to cut it as the paper is thicker than the normal printing paper and made a 2nd pass for it to be cut completely.

S3810014.thumb.JPG.68eb9cbb5f9c82ece46987e398d3130a.JPGS3810015.thumb.JPG.901b7add3ba3e68ca5035e575760131b.JPGS3810016.thumb.JPG.026fece0edeb77ba478fd7e54745618e.JPGS3810017.thumb.JPG.8eb94a4d4fe2983944da2cb50f72aa7f.JPGS3810019.thumb.JPG.04689bd014ac6c5e1996cebff9b676b6.JPG

There i made another measurement because i wasn't satisfied to where the previous one were, so generally, i "pushed" it a few centimeters to the right

and lifted i little bit the corner where the "2" will rest.

S3810020.thumb.JPG.b44f62311caf7c469ba1a4ec5df04873.JPG

It was quite late that i started cutting, but did cut something because i'm living close to downtown to my city.

This is the result of less than 3 minutes of cutting.

S3810022.thumb.JPG.7a2798e52f370d8d531b30f3b55ec726.JPG

I cutted it this way so it will be easier to file it down later close to the angle where the "2" will be placed.

More cutting and probably a video will be uploaded tomorrow.

Good Morning! My partner made me some final images of the game logo and how it will stand on top of the case! The images are made according to the case size and dimensions!

Here they are some in different shots/angles!!

For now lets cut the side panel!!

The cutting process went really well and i am really satisfied with the end result. But no matter what, in every cutting process will be lot of filing, and as perfectionist, i tried my best to make it look great and as it should! Here are some images after the cutting.

S3820001.thumb.JPG.99827c48d658dbecdf7890d088896c70.JPGS3820002.thumb.JPG.05365737ba721e5768cf64dff75f4f6a.JPG

Here is the edge before i smooth it out with the speedclic at first.

S3820003.thumb.JPG.d5b0330673f6f3b76b801f55b18bf958.JPG

And here is one after the smoothing.

S3820004.thumb.JPG.f5c6b8c557043389919c52c948243578.JPG

Here is what's left of the speedclic! It done its job pretty decently! I'm happy for it and the result!!

S3820005.thumb.JPG.ba83b174541c1715f69a6519133beaad.JPG

Now, lets start some filing with our fellow assistants!

S3820006.thumb.JPG.4106f0a538acfb986326dc58ab1c1687.JPG

For some detail filing, i had to change the dremel's bit with this.

S3820007.thumb.JPG.d53a5b51d2d532b7ae674b9a6392ee8b.JPG

The whole process was inspection, filing, inspection, filing until the end result.

Here are some images of the process with the tapes peeled off for better detailing in filing.

S3820008.thumb.JPG.4f56cd92dab452f4ee82e38d770559f3.JPGS3820009.thumb.JPG.2fd88951f79c80dbe2b4eaffaf30138e.JPGS3820010.thumb.JPG.fcfec9f486c1e22efe2d01ad0477d1ef.JPGS3820011.thumb.JPG.7e00976e0b77567758a0c6e17eb9deff.JPGS3820012.thumb.JPG.f4aec7f0ba640c196ac9a284eccde2c1.JPGS3820013.thumb.JPG.c4309e0dc24c84ffc3961d357384cc11.JPGS3820014.thumb.JPG.dc63745ee07dc1331ced6464ec9c9415.JPG

What happens now, is prep the surface for the "scorched" effect along the outline which will be done with fiberglass putty and leave it unprocessed.

More pictures will come soon enough!!

So, here we are again, preping the surface of the panel so the effect will be applied better.

Here are some images of the panel with roughed color using a decent sander. In some of them you might notice the beginning of the effect that i am making on it.

S3820038.thumb.JPG.cbfb802733ea0e332919744065153d61.JPGS3820039.thumb.JPG.53886a034e23d9dda7f8d94091006037.JPGS3820040.thumb.JPG.645ff976db034397dae40da58d34ac14.JPGS3820041.thumb.JPG.547f3d523fffe28c2398dc804dbb6340.JPGS3820042.thumb.JPG.31c3d0243461cbb78b4cfc36cd09d9ef.JPGS3820043.thumb.JPG.dab561fa32f54c2008d25a7fb5107d15.JPG

So, with that done, i moved on the other side panel where i want to make the same effect so what i thought is make it mirrored. at first i took measures from the other side panel where the logo was cutted and applied them to the other one. So, what i did next, was write some points on the panel where the logo should be placed and then put the logo accordingly so i would paint the outline. I realized next that this was inaccurate and the points weren't right, so i thought to place the cutted panel inverted on the other one. So next i aligned them properly and afterwards i painted with primer what was cutted and then make the effect on that panel too.

S3820019.thumb.JPG.a95a6791b39b9d76970ad16aa1eb57de.JPGS3820020.thumb.JPG.bae9dc94bb3cf60c90afb0a7aba4f8b3.JPGS3820021.thumb.JPG.8f2c1df91102af269fb5f7b8f04d819a.JPGS3820022.thumb.JPG.c57175281e6cf52aa1d7322bc73588e1.JPG

Here is ready to be painted.

S3820023.thumb.JPG.ce1852701cd67db2d7b9f50748a2c1f1.JPGS3820024.thumb.JPG.b0886aa77dbcb1c496e8fb599595edba.JPGS3820025.thumb.JPG.8c9b4d171247b0bb7725edd0ca7c91b7.JPG

Paint's ready!!

S3820026.thumb.JPG.51b8528cb8dc2f06242a2ad4173147d7.JPG

As you can see, there is still on the sticker of the operating system so what i did to remove it and sand a bit the area, was wet it with nitro thinner at first and as i was peeling it off, i re-did the area with thinner so the residue would vanish.

S3820027.thumb.JPG.73971202eadef70a294e8ecd178046eb.JPGS3820028.thumb.JPG.390fddb67bea56288d822fd7846c6ece.JPG

Here is removed and sanded.

S3820029.thumb.JPG.231bf0b7f431a970903029d3efc3cdb3.JPG

So, now lets move on the main panel. What i want here is make the outline look scorched and like it's been melted. What i'm using is some fiberglass putty and hardener for the job. To make that effect i simply spreaded it with my finger along the outline. That way you will create that abstract/irregular effect. It is just some sample images i want to show you during the process and as it evolves.

The spreader and its follower!

S3820032.thumb.JPG.99ebcb96a10a310c55874a590e3f1069.JPG

The mixture ready to be made! (I tried another can of putty i have and i saw that it is almost its decay, so i won't be using it any further)

S3820033.thumb.JPG.2d9ba960d917891ba436814a6a144b5d.JPG

Some more images with putty applied. (remember, this is just sample shots of how it looks and evolves)
