Hot-Swap Removal / Retrofit

I've just purchased an HAF XB which I'm building as a general purpose PC, optimized for photo and video editing. (I was drawn to the MB-on-top, full-ATX layout.)

I haven't built a PC in a dozen years and, until now, I was unfamiliar w/ hot-swapping - I thought that was what happened at key parties. (Har!) So I assumed, from the web photos, that the openings were 3.5", where I could install, e.g., a memory card reader or... IDK, a floppy drive? What else is 3.5"?

It turns out those front openings are 4.75" - an odd size. Consequently, I bought a 5.75" card reader, which takes up a slot where I'd rather have a second optical drive or I/O panel for audio production.

I've got two 3.5" HDD inside (2TB, mirrored) and a 2.5" SSD mounted to the memory card reader chassis, and I don't need a hot-swap drive. (Or do I? Please tell!)  I could remove the hot-swap cage, perhaps find a 3.5" cage for other I/O possibilities, but I doubt the openings would line up correctly, or even be the correct height.

I'm struggling to come up with another use for the openings and that lower-right corner of the case. I've even thought about buying a full tower case instead, for the additional I/O possibilities, and building a HTPC, which I don't need but I've probably got enough old parts laying around to build, just to use the XB case, which is awesome, and (at 17") is a perfect width for an A/V cabinet. Or just wait it out - perhaps I'll want another two HDDs someday.

Any other ideas?

A hot swap drive could be really helpful when transferring data (especially if you do a lot of editing etc.)

Have you thought of buying an external card reader?

Cheers, Pim
