    Case Recommendation

    HDDs themselves produce very little heat, only bare ten watts per 7200rpm desktop drive (compare to 250+W semiconductor heaters claiming to be graphics card) but problem is in old cases cramming them tightly together like sardines in tin causing heat build up. And with drives tightly together even fan has harder job in cooling them because airflow is blocked from flowing between drives.With 1cm/0.5" space between drives airflow needed for cooling them is actually rather small. Google's study of data gathered from their file servers suggests than in 24/7 use (no thermal stresses from daily powering off/on) little higher sounding around 40C temperature might be actually optimal. That Fashion version is downgraded from original PC-A77: It lost PC-A70 family's top rear cage for three HDDs so besides higher price also its storage capability is inferior to cheaper A70/A71 models. (9x3.5"+3x5.25" vs. 10x3.5"+5x5.25")And in case of you ever becoming interested about silencing A71's noise containing design needs only mass damping (like bitumen mat) for realizing potential while gamer cheese graters and open front cases will always leak out every mechanical noise and frequency spike unmuffled no matter what you do. (been there...) Compared to PC-A77F Coolermaster's ATCS 840 could in practise fit same amount of devices with less noise leaking design. I/O port module can be changed at least in Lian Li's full towers so lack of USB3 isn't any problem. Especially considering there isn't even any internal pin header meaning current USB3 port systems might become obsolete/hard to use when they standardize internal pin header connector for USB3. No need to freeze drives. I have original PC-A71B and with its push-pull fan config around HDD cage I would be worried about drives running too cold if those fans were running much above 1000rpm.
  2. That's not really much of cooling with fans being restricted by those stamped meshes. And did you check how flat CPU's heatspreader and heatsink's base are?But if that load temperature is with Linpack stressing it's probably in line with what it should be. Two of the cores probably have sensor's lowest reading stuck at higher level than others but it's load temperatures which are important.

    Radiator for ATCS 840

    Slipstream has very small motor hub so dead airflow area is probably half compared to standard 12cm fan and bigger fans just tend to have bigger hubs. You have to remember that areas of radiator without airflow don't do work.Also as bigger fans turn slower pressure is decreased especially nearer hub where linear blade speed becomes very low making impedance tolerance low. In case of Raven 2 there's then that cheap stamped bottom mesh adding some impedance which might be enough with radiator to bring airflow crashing down to ground.
  4. Only elastic suspension mounting can absorpt all normal HDD vibrations. With other mountings you need mass damping. HDD cage would be the best place to start doing it because of being closest to vibration source but with this complex design it's not possible so you just have to cover bigger panels/surfaces with special attention to those which resonate fully. Bitumen felt/mat/what ever it happens to be called in that general store is well working mass damping material.
  5. You don't really want to lap direct touch heatpipe cooler much any. Heatpipe walls aren't very thick and people have grinded through them.
  6. That does the grounding only if PSU is plugged to grounded outlet or case is on surface which is grounded. Otherwise PSU's casing and chassis is just floating at some unknown potential.But equalizing potential between chassis and you directly is still better than equalizing it through component you're installing when it touches components inside chassis. Also lot depends on water content of air because humid air makes any static charges to disperse by itself while in dry environment static charges can easily built up to very high levels. (nice when taking sweater of keeps zapping you to ears, you could actually notice those sparks in dark)
  7. The truth is that side fans are way overhyped. In worst case they can even increase temperature by messing case airflow and as GPUs is under its own active HSF outside airflow has very little if any effect to its temperature. 5770 reached 80C in this test: Then again that was in FurMark which is lot heavier than games...
  8. Looks like connector's cable might be miswired... If whole PC and PSU shuts down totally it could be shortcircuiting 5V and in case of otherwise wrong connection system crash would be understandable result.
  9. All modern Intels are very good at idling meaning big heat production changes.But in case of overclocking using Auto settings might make BIOS to overvolt CPU fast so at least that should be set manually. Did those reviewers use dual core or quad?
  10. Relatively thick acrylic window is acoustically way better than non-existing default cheesegrater side and also better than thin metal panel... But as front is fully open plugging side doesn't help really any and only way is to prevent sound being created. So with side open start checking different parts: Do you feel vibration in HDD cage? What about are frames of those big fans vibrating?
  11. Anything which is dense works, like bitumen mat and some dense vinyl mats. Those generic materials are clearly cheaper than good mats purposely sold for PC use.

  14. Wanting to run triple crossfire with everything heavily overclocked? HD5870's FurMark peak draw is 160W, in games it wil lbe closer to 110W. As everything worked normally with previous PSU motherboard problem is unlikely, unless it for some reason decided to develop some problem. Does it work normally if you change old PSU back?
  15. Isn't that control of fan LEDs done with separate wiring for LEDs?
