Strange the OCZ will not work... but you'll probably have no problem selling it... I hope the machine will perform well.. with the eVGA 8800GTX i think it should !

  4. ok so you've narrowed the problem down to the mobo install on the tray, cool.. I think, since you carefully mounted the mobo, the only place a short could happen is where the metal mountings (risers) on the tray touch the mobo. There's probably 9 of them ? I would recommend taking them all off the tray. Next, install 4 of them : on all edges of the mobo. Make sure they align correctly with the holes in the mobo by putting the mobo on the tray and check that you see the thread inside the riser aligning with the corresponding mobo hole. Loosely screw the bolts in the 4 holes (don't worry about tightening them exactly even, that is not crucial - just lightly tighten the screws) and see if the system will boot. If so, add 1 or 2 risers at a time and boot. This will take some time, but it's the only way i know of to achieve a reliable and reproducable result... Maybe you can take a shortcut : if one of the risers was (factory) installed in the wrong hole in the tray, it touches the mobo on a spot it shouldn't. The mobo has more holes than needed to mount it ; make sure you use the right holes in the mobo. On the backside of the mobo you can recognize the right holes easily : those holes are surrounded by a small metal washer-like reinforcement. That is specifically meant for mounting stuff. I have seen risers in the wrong place touching the mobo on unprotected parts (and no hole in the mobo where it touches it) and shorting the whole thing...
  5. you bought a load of cool stuff, but i hope that's not connected in this stage ? Testing at this stage should be performed with just the PSU, mobo/cpu/memory and video card imho. If this combo works outside the case, it should work in the case also. If it does not, you're shorting something during installation... I have seen screws too long screwed into the PSU causing shorts, or installations that had metal rings between mobo and tray "because it is better, just like with my motorbike" that shorted the mobo, etc. I would test outside the case first. ok ? mount the PSU in the case and try again. ok ? mount mobo and try again. This way at least you can determine where in the installation process the problem is introduced....
  6. Hi all, since i started this thread, i thought i would let you all know how it worked out... I have used capitals to complain ; so i think i can use them now COOLERMASTER made me a VERY NICE OFFER ! I accepted this offer happily. As far as i am concerned, a few things have been accomplished : 1. CM made good on a promise. 2. CM compensated me for problems with one of their products. Again, a very nice gesture was made ; better than i expected or had hoped for. 3. My trust in CM has been restored fully by this. I wish to express my thanks to Robby who made this possible ; and ofcourse to all people involved in this. Thank you CoolerMaster for turning this bad feeling into a good experience !!   7. I know... but i like to have most of my data directy accessible... And i had a few bad experiences with cd's and dvd's that went bad within 3 years... lots of data lost.... so now it's all on HDD & tape & dvd ) (I still burn dvd's but i add 15% par files. That improves the chance of 100% data integrity (after 3 year) from 61% to 99,7% !) Just me swimming upstream again
  8. yes, correct - 12 HDDs, 400 GB each. I divided the them in 2 raid5 sets of 6 disks. That makes for 2 volumes of 1,6 TB so 3.2 TB total. Still i need more :-) Haha, the passive coolblock makes a big difference in noise doesn't it ? And it looks better too !
  9. btw i see you've got a kick-:) system too, a bit like mine ! It will most likely outperform my system though :-/ I chose the A8N-E too 'cause of the better chipset and sata2 support.. but the guy i ordered my stuff delivered the A8N5X... and i did not want to wait for the A8N-E because the difference was not really important to me : sata 2 would be serving the system HDDs and i do not need the max performance for that. I looked at the AMD x2 3800 too : approx. same price & a better choice for gaming i think ; but only half the cache per cpu. And for fileserver/webserver/SQL etc i need the cache..
  10. haha, i remember someone saying something like "i swim upstream where others go downstream" or something to that effect.... This is my server - and i want it to be stable, lotsa diskspace and functionality : gaming is not for my server... Add to that i want it to be quiet.. and the fact i operate my server using terminal services.... All that made me choose to replace the northbridge 'screamer' fan with something passive so it won't break or make loud noise all the time ; and the same goes for the video card... no fan so it cannot break down or make noise and still this card is 'overpowered' to provide terminal services quality screen output. Yeah, i agree in gamers eyes it's a lousy videocard - but it's a good choice for the job it is supposed to do price/performance wise .. that's why i am probably swimming upstream compared to the folk here
  11. Well, the first 500W A**** Phantom gave up when i put the system together.... My system : CM Stacker STC-T01 Asus A8N5X mobo ( with active northbridge cooling replaced by Zalman passive coolblock) AMD Opteron 165 dual core Zalman Cu 7700 CPU cooler 3Ware sata xor 12 port raid controller 12 WD 4000 YR (Raid Edition 2) 400GB HDDs (RAID5) 2 WD HDDs (mirrored) as system disk 4GB Kingston 400Mhz memory GF5200 passively cooled PSU : 2 x A**** Phantom 500 When i built this system i installed mobo, cpu + cooler, memory, video card & NIC, & 2 system disks. 1 PSU. I plugged in the 3Ware controller and added the first hdd. Label portnumber on the cable, power down ; next ! After hdd #8 the PSU tried to boot the system and shut down. Remove 1 disk... boot is ok. I had hoped the "staggered spinup" of the 3Ware card would make it possible to use just 1 PSU (staggered spinup is meant specifically to save the PSU from high peak load on startup) .... but no go So i did need a 2nd PSU.... Too bad but still okay : i intend to add a 2nd raid controller & 4 or 5 disks shortly - so instead of powering just 4 HDDs the 2nd PSU will have to earn it's money :-))

I think if you change the psu light to green it will be too much green... the way it is now i think it's great ! Coming up to the case from behind it kinda looks like a spaceship - looking into the sidepanel it looks alive.. kinda alien.. How about ALIEN ? You guys rule ! And best of luck in the contest !
  13. i use 2 A**** 500W PSUs - connected using the CM 24 pin y-cable. IMHO it's great ! No dummy load needed, great power efficiency. CM made their case modular this way : in my case i exceeded the power the 1st PSU could deliver - and CM made it possible to use a 2nd PSU. Good reasoning, i think. Only downside i see is cable management - but that's a choice you can make. A**** is hard to beat - quiet, stable, great efficiency, good price. But now CM has the IGreen 600W : and it's (from what i have found in comparison) a serious contender/alternative. And the pricing is better than A****. So i am considering replacing mine with the CM IGreen 600. It's tested very well all around.

If you read this thread http://www.coolermaster.com/phpBB2/view ... hlight=810, you may want to choose a STC-T01. ( if you still want any CM case at all ) Why do you think the new tray will solve the problem ? Is it a new and improved tray ? A tray from another model case perhaps ? BTW - imho if you dremeled your brand new case because CM recommended that, they are at least morally obligated to RMA the case if that fails... I read your posts and taste the very same dissatisfaction with CM . I have also installed hundreds of mobos in all sorts of cases and i have never seen anything this bad !! A production flaw is not a big problem : if you adress it the right way. I feel like you, and i hope you are treated better than i have been treated.
  16. Merovingian, Knud, thanks for your reactions. I already talked to Ron, Roy (=Dragon83?), and lastly my case was handed over to Robby.. Merovingian, i feel where you're coming from. I started this thread quite positive - hoping to be able to help identify and improve upon a problem with the 810. I feel supported by the opinion of a professional metal worker who said the mobo tray is too flimsy and will have to bend under the strain of all welding/soldering that's done to it. If that's so, it's a production fault. The fact the 2nd case had the same identical problem supports that too. (btw i do not intend to start a discussion about this being a production fault or not) But i felt that CM should know about this. CM promised me something - which i think was nice. But my case has been handed over from one person to the next - and some 9 months have passed. Like i said, i am not a beggar. But if someone creates a situation where you have to ask and ask for something that was promised - they make you feel that way. Normal healthy pride and anger about such a treatment (you wondered who screwed me ?) will make a person stop asking. Thanks to you guys for taking the time and effort.
  17. well, after being pushed over from support person to the next... Promises were made to compensate me for the money loss, trouble, time loss..... No one made good on those promises. Unfortunately the hope i had that CM would jump at the opportunity to restore my trust is now shattered. I give up. I am not a beggar - i bought an expensive box that gave me problems and cost me money. I was promised compensation : no-one compensated me. CM, i must say : from a pro-active advertiser for your products i now advise against CM because of this issue.I work in IT and i value customer service - after-sales even more. A good product with bad after-sales and bad service is worse than a less good product with great service. I am very disappointed in CM.

    How to add more drives

    dunno if you need the front panel ? i removed mine and fitted a 4th 4-in-3. I use the chassis 'intrusion detection' button on the back as power button for those rare times i turn off the machine and need to power it on again. Usually i use WOL to remotely turn the machine on, or a keyboard hotkey for that purpose. USB comes from the back of the chassis, sound too.

  20. and 1 more vote for the original Stacker. Version2, that is. how about moving the power/reset button and LEDs to the top panel ? This case is begging to be maxed out - and the top panel as it is, requires modding before the 4th 4-in-3 will fit. I think putting the power- and reset button and LEDs into the top panel would look even better than the current design..
  21. Hi, Which Stacker is the best ? Well if you read my problems with the 810 http://www.coolermaster.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4070 you may not wish to have it and find yourself a STC-T01. I asked the same question you did here : http://www.coolermaster.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3796&highlight=810 - you may find it useful. I would definitely try to get the 'old' STC-T01 if you do not wish to use the 13'' x 16'' mobo with up to 4 CPU's, or use a NOCONA CPU. It has a removable mobo tray - the 810 does not. It has the crossflow fan - the 810 does not. It allows for both ATX and BTX - the 810 does not. The 810 has a small 'intrusion detection' switch on the sidepanel the STC-T01 does not offer. I found the dimensions on both PSU mount cages on the floor to be the same, so if you can find a dual PSU for redundancy, both cases support it. The 810 has no top mounted PSU so it has degraded airflow. It makes up for that by having 2 fans in the back (the STC-T01 has 1 but the PSU fan in the top adds extra airflow), so in effect i do not expect the 'improved airflow' the 810 is supposed to offer is very much better that that of the STC-T01. So i would set the STC-T01 against the 830 and look which suits your needs best. Hope this helps.
  22. Hi all, just to let you know and maybe to help in building a better Stacker ? I asked for advice what case to buy - an STC-T01 or 810 on this board a while ago. (http://www.coolermaster.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3796&highlight=810) With your help i decided the 810 was not for me - i was going to buy the STC-T01. So what did i do ? I let myself get talked into buying a 810 case. (....) First thing - try to take out the mobo tray. HUH ? It is removable, right ? Nope... it is popped to the chassis. sjait... Next, let's put in a mobo. My STC-T01 was/is a piece of cake. I expected the same from the 810. Even though the mobo tray is not removable as advertised. What happened ? I tried to tighten the screws and found............... It would either be attached to the chassis and have the opposite side of the PCI/AGP card pulled out of the mobo (so much the card would hardly work and every slight tap on the case would cause a blue-screen - indicating the card could not be fitted properly), or the card would be seated correctly and the card would have 1 cm distance to the chassis it is supposed to be screwed onto. So the cards would be sitting in the pci/agp slot without connection to the chassis, just waiting to be pulled free - causing damage to a running system. ( the word 'scr*wed' being the operative one as you will see... read on.) I went back to the seller. That's half a day down the drain, 40 km travel costs and 20 EUR 'investigation' costs. Result : the case is good ... they said. They put in a el-cheapo mobo and a card and used only 4 screws to tighten the mobo. I went over there again to pick up the case. That's half a day down the drain, 40 km travel costs. Back home i spent a few days figuring out what the problem could be. Eventually i found it .... the mobo tray is BENT !!! The outside of the case was undamaged and the mobo tray surface was kinda bulged outwards. Definitely not transport or handling. I could not believe my eyes. I could not believe my ears either. Put my hand on the bulge and gently press.... PLONG ! and release .... PLONG ! With enough force to bend a motherboard. And bend it so bad that a PCI or AGP card could not be fitted. Rule #1 when fitting a mobo : *do not* install it under strain. So, back to the seller. That's half a day down the drain, 40 km travel costs. They acknowledged the problem and contacted CM Holland. CM said they *never* had anyone complain about something like this. But they would RMA the case. Nice - for the seller. The seller offered me a different case. I opened the case and found the same problem, though a bit less extreme. But the mobo would still be bent after correct mounting. Seller : "we have built numerous systems like this and they all work, even while bent like this" Yeah, right...... maybe that's so. Back to Rule #1 when fitting a mobo : *do not* install it under strain. After a lot of persuading they offered me : 1. the full amount, 146 EUR, could be spent freely in only their shop. 2. refund of 146 EUR *minus* 10 % ?! Eventually i accepted the 2nd offer and got something back from the 'investigation' that had not been properly done. I got 141 EUR back and have no case. This cost me : * 146 EUR purchase and 20 EUR investigation = 166 EUR * 3 times travel = 3 * 40 = 120 km travel costs. That's approx 15 EUR in gas. * 1.5 days time wasted. I got back : 141 EUR. I lost 40 EUR and 1.5 day i could have spent better. My trust in CM got a big dent, too. And still have no case. See ? Why i feel screwed ? There's more. I have taken the 810 to a metal specialist in my company. His conclusion : the mobo tray is made of too flimsy/thin material. It cannot cope with all the heat caused by welding all the mountpoints onto the thin tray, causing it to bend. So this is a flawed production ! Not all trays will be bent as much as others - but all have the problem. And that's a problem in my opinion - especcially with a 'server' case. This is not a case i would mount a 'normal' mobo in. And especcially not the expensive Tyan board i wanted in there. Even after this horrible experience i wish to purchase a CM case. An STC-T01. CM, can you feel the dark clouds hanging above my head ? I do not blame CM for the behaviour of the seller, that would be stupid. What i see as a flawed production process, did hurt me also. That's where CM comes in - if the case had been good i would not have lost 1.5 valuable days, and tens of Euros in other costs. And i would still be a very satisfied CM customer. CM Is there anything you can do for me to turn this rotten experience into a nice one and restore the trust i had in CM ? Thanks, Rijk
  23. Thanks, looks like imageshack is having probs again but even from the small pic it looks great ! Good stuff, i chose a Tyan Tomcat K8E, Athlon64 3500+ and Golden Orb II cooler, and a 3Ware Escalade 8506-12 Sata controller to control the 8 500 GB HDDs i ordered. I am thinking to go with the Enlight 3-in-2 drive cages, since that will allow me to put 18 disks in my Stacker. Dunno if i will though since i love the quiet 4-in-3 from CM with 12 cm fan - most drive cages have a 8 cm screamer on the back.. Thanks, Rijk

    yep i read wrong...damn.. for me it was deep into the night... I like the price/quality ratio of that PSU. Even for temp use i would buy it, it's a very nice PSU and a cheap way to have a spare. 2 of my buddies use that one and they both love it.

    well, i dunno what Dell you're using but Dell has a history of using non-standard PSU sizes, and/or non-standard mobo pin assignment. Is the Antec dead ? You could at least look at the PSU size. Trying to use the Antec (or any other 'standard' PSU) on the Dell mobo might result in damage. Maybe Dell can provide you with an answer, or maybe the pin assignment of the mobo connector ?
